WELCOME TO
PHILIPPE ROCHETTE
OPTICIEN

Philippe Rochette, aka le Bonhomme à lunettes, is an optician unlike any other. Since 2007, he has been working with community organizations in and around Montreal to offer a great choice of affordable glasses for men, women and children.

Possibility of $20 glasses for social assistance recipients. For children up to 17 years old, glasses are free thanks to the «See Better to Succeed» program.

THE
BONHOMME'S
MANIFESTO

Glasses are not a luxury. Seeing clearly is a necessity. My mission as an optician is to make glasses affordable to everyone. I am absolutely convinced that people should be prioritized over profits.

HONESTY,
SIMPLICITY AND
SOLIDARITY

My business model is based on 3 core principles: honesty, simplicity and solidarity. I offer an opportunity to save on something essential while allowing clients to give 10$ back to a community partner. How do I do that? It’s actually pretty simple. With my knowledge of the market and by keeping my exploitation costs to a minimum. No head office, no expansive billboard ads, no «prestigious» brands. Instead, I just sell quality affordable glasses and trust word-to-mouth as well as the dynamism and collaboration spirit of community organizers.

TAKE AN EYE EXAM WITH AN OPTOMETRIST

An optician is basically the pharmacist of glasses. We work with your prescription. That’s why you need to first take an eye exam with an optometrist (any will do). Their code of ethics (Section 3 – Freedom of choice) requires them to give you your prescription if you ask for it.

With your carte d’assurance-maladie, the exam is free for children 17 and under as well as adults over 65. Normally, it’s around $100. It might also be covered by your insurance. More details in our FAQ section.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

Technically anywhere. Sometimes, even if the code of ethics of optometrists prohibits it, it can be difficult to obtain the prescription following an exam. Remember that they *have* to give it to you if you want it. On the other hand, it is much easier in the big chains. Or even at the clinique des yeux de Laval à Ste-Rose. Why? Because these professionals do not sell glasses.

CAN I KEEP MY FRAMES?

Sure. Why not? it’ll be cheaper for you! But we are not responsible for the (very rare) cases where the frames get broken during lens insertion or the adjustment. We have final say; if we believe the frame is too old, we simply won’t do it.

IS PORTES ORANGE OPENED AT ALL TIMES?

Our headquarter, Portes Orange is located in the Mile End at 160 St-Viateur street, suite 404. It is opened from Monday to Friday. Because of COVID-related restrictions, an appointment is necessary: 514-303-4315

DO YOU HAVE SUNGLASSES?

Yes! Our sunglasses are inexpensive, just like our regular glasses!

CAN I USE YOUR SERVICE, OR IS IT ONLY FOR PEOPLE ON WELFARE?

Regardless of your financial situation, we will be happy to welcome you. Our mission remains the same: to make glasses accessible to everyone!

WHAT IF I HAVE REDUCED MOBILITY?

Wheelchair accessible sites are identified. We can also make occasional visits to the place of your choice if you have a minimum of 3 people.

WHY ARE THERE NO DATES ON YOUR SCHEDULE?

Normally, we have a weekly schedule! Same day, same time, same place every week. However, we advise you to always take a look at the schedule before showing up.

DO I NEED TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT?

If you look at our schedule, you will see which service points require an appointment. Just call the number on the schedule. For walk-in service points, simply show up within the indicated time slot. No need to arrive first, we'll see everyone!

DO YOU HAVE CONTACT LENSES?

Unfortunately no. That would require too much equipment for mobile opticians!

HOW MUCH DO YOUR GLASSES COST?

Do you know the story of the guy who calls the restaurant to find out how much it will cost him for his dinner? Well… it depends on what you have on the menu! Our glasses are inexpensive. However, as there are several particularities to prescriptions, this prevents us from answering with precision. However, we can tell you this : 99.9% of our glasses are sold for under $500. Our prices are worth your visit and we are a ressource for more than 175 community organizations. We see ourselves as a sort of safety net. For this reason, we always find an affordable solution for your budget and according to your needs.
